Hornady markets its American Whitetail 150-grain for large game. It carries the InterLock SP, a lead-core spire point with a raised ring inside the jacket that locks the jacket to the core. The bullet is rated at a G1 BC of .338 and leaves the muzzle at 2,820 fps, and at 300 yards it still carries 1,418 ft-lbs of energy.

Compared with the PMC Bronze 150-grain PSP, the American Whitetail is almost a twin. Both leave the muzzle at the same speed and kick the same in the same rifle. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each of them about 30 inches sideways, and zeroed at 100 yards each drops about 62 inches at 500. Compared with Hornady's Superformance CX 165, a copper bullet with no lead core, the American Whitetail starts 70 fps faster but falls behind with distance. At 500 yards the same wind pushes the CX about 22 inches, and the CX drops about 58. The CX also kicks about 18 percent harder in the same rifle.

Buy the American Whitetail if you hunt large game inside 300 yards and want the lighter kick of a 150-grain bullet; out to 300 yards it drops within half an inch of the CX. Pick the PMC Bronze 150-grain PSP if you want a second load on the same path, since the two match at the muzzle and through 500 yards. Pick the Superformance CX if your shots may stretch to 400 or 500 yards or you want a bullet with no lead core; at 300 yards it carries about 300 ft-lbs more. For practice, Federal's American Eagle 150-grain is a full metal jacket range load that leaves the muzzle at the same speed and kicks the same in the same rifle.
