Product Overview
Federal markets its Power-Shok 180-grain for big game at long range. It uses a jacketed soft point, a lead-core bullet in a metal jacket with lead exposed at the tip, rated at a G1 BC of .382. It leaves the muzzle at 2,570 fps.
Compared with PPU's Standard Rifle 165, a lighter soft point with a boat tail, the Power-Shok starts slower and kicks about 14 percent harder in the same rifle. At 300 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Power-Shok about 10 inches sideways and the PPU about 8. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Power-Shok drops about 17 inches at 300 and the PPU about 15. Compared with Federal's Trophy Copper 165, a polymer-tipped copper bullet with no lead core, the Power-Shok also starts slower and kicks about 13 percent harder; zeroed at 100 yards, the Trophy Copper drops about 14 inches at 300.
Buy the Power-Shok 180 if you want a 180-grain lead-core bullet for big game, as Federal markets it, and your shots stay inside 300 yards. Pick PPU's Standard Rifle 165 if you want a lead-core soft point with less recoil and a flatter path. Pick the Trophy Copper 165 if you expect longer shots or need a bullet with no lead core; at 500 yards it carries about 320 ft-lbs more than the Power-Shok. For range practice with less kick, Federal's Gold Medal Match 168-grain is a match hollow point with a boat tail.
