Product Overview
PPU's Standard Rifle 165-grain is a soft point hunting load for shooters who want a heavier bullet than a 150 without stepping up to a 180. It carries a pointed soft point with a boat tail: a jacketed lead-core bullet with lead exposed at the tip and a tapered base. It is rated at a G1 BC of .439 and leaves the muzzle at 2,674 fps.
Compared with Federal's Power-Shok 180, another lead-core soft point, the PPU starts faster and kicks about 12 percent less in the same rifle. At 400 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the PPU about 14 inches sideways and the Power-Shok about 18. Zeroed at 100 yards, the PPU drops about 34 inches at 400 and the Power-Shok about 39. Compared with Federal's Trophy Copper 165, a polymer-tipped copper bullet with no lead core, the PPU starts at nearly the same speed and kicks about the same, but falls behind with distance: at 400 yards the same wind pushes the Trophy Copper about 12 inches.
Buy PPU's Standard Rifle 165 if you want a lead-core soft point that drops less and drifts less than the Power-Shok 180 out to 400 yards. Pick the Power-Shok 180 if you want Federal's heavier bullet, which Federal markets for big game, and can accept more recoil. Pick the Trophy Copper 165 if you need a bullet with no lead core or expect shots to 500 yards, where it carries 1,300 ft-lbs against 1,133 for the PPU. If you mostly shoot paper, Federal's Gold Medal Match 168-grain is a match hollow point with a boat tail that kicks about the same as the PPU in the same rifle.
