Product Overview
Hornady markets its Precision Hunter 178-grain ELD-X for medium and large game, and it suits hunters whose shots can stretch past 300 yards. The ELD-X is a polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a boat tail. Hornady rates it at a G1 BC of .552, and the load leaves the muzzle at 2,750 fps.
Compared with Federal's 175-grain Terminal Ascent, which Federal markets for big game at long range, the ELD-X keeps a small edge downrange. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the ELD-X about 17 inches sideways and the Terminal Ascent about 18. Zeroed at 100 yards, the ELD-X drops about 54 inches at 500; the Terminal Ascent about 56. The ELD-X kicks about 4 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Hornady's Superformance 180-grain SST, the ELD-X starts 70 fps slower, yet the two drop about the same at 500 yards. The difference is wind: the same 10 mph wind pushes the SST about 19 inches. The SST also kicks about 5 percent harder.
Buy the ELD-X if you hunt medium and large game in open country, where long shots in wind are likely. Pick the Terminal Ascent if you want nearly the same path with a little less recoil. Pick the SST if most of your shots fall inside 300 yards, where its extra speed keeps its drop even with the ELD-X. If recoil is the main concern, Barnes' 130-grain Reduced Recoil TTSX kicks about 46 percent less, and Barnes markets it for hunters who prefer lighter recoil out to 300 yards.
- Carries 116 more ft-lbs at 400 yards than Federal's 175-grain Terminal Ascent
- Its G1 BC of .552 is well above the .480 of Hornady's Superformance 180-grain SST
- Drifts about 3 inches less than Remington's 180-grain Core-Lokt Tipped at 500 yards in a 10 mph crosswind
- Hornady's Superformance 180-grain SST starts with more energy at the muzzle, 3,178 ft-lbs against 2,989
- Inside 300 yards the edge is small: Federal's 180-grain Fusion drops only about an inch more at 300 from a 100-yard zero
- Hornady's Superformance 180-grain SST drops slightly less at 500 yards, about 53 inches against 54 from a 100-yard zero
