Product Overview
Hornady markets its Superformance 180-grain SST for medium and large game, and the reason to pick it is speed: it leaves the muzzle at 2,820 fps. The SST is a polymer-tipped hunting bullet, and Hornady rates it at a G1 BC of .480.
Compared with Hornady's American Whitetail 180-grain InterLock, a conventional soft point, the SST starts 120 fps faster and shoots flatter. Zeroed at 100 yards, the SST drops about 53 inches at 500 and the InterLock about 60. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the SST about 19 inches sideways and the InterLock about 22. Compared with Remington's 180-grain Core-Lokt Tipped, which has the same G1 BC, the SST starts 75 fps faster, and that head start is the whole difference: from the same zero the Core-Lokt Tipped drops about 56 inches at 500. The SST kicks about 3 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the SST if you want the flattest path of the three for medium and large game and don't mind a little more recoil. Pick the Core-Lokt Tipped if you want a similar tipped bullet with slightly less kick. Pick the American Whitetail InterLock if you want a conventional soft point and your shots stay inside 200 yards, where it drops only about half an inch more than the SST. If recoil matters more than speed, Barnes' 130-grain Reduced Recoil TTSX kicks about 49 percent less.
