Product Overview
Remington markets its 180-grain Core-Lokt Tipped for big game. It is a polymer-tipped version of Remington's Core-Lokt bullet, rated at a G1 BC of .480, and it leaves the muzzle at 2,745 fps.
Compared with Federal's 180-grain Fusion, a bonded soft point, the Core-Lokt Tipped starts 45 fps faster and kicks slightly harder in the same rifle. Zeroed at 100 yards, it drops about 56 inches at 500; the Fusion about 58. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes both about 20 inches sideways. Compared with Hornady's Superformance 180-grain SST, which has the same G1 BC, the Core-Lokt Tipped starts 75 fps slower. From the same zero, the SST drops about 53 inches at 500 yards. The SST also kicks about 3 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the Core-Lokt Tipped if you want a polymer-tipped bullet for big game with a flatter path than the Fusion and less recoil than the SST. Pick the Fusion if you want Federal's bonded soft point, which Federal says is built for deer hunting. Pick the SST if you want the flattest path of the three and can take the extra kick. For practice with less recoil, Hornady's 168-grain Vintage Match kicks about 14 percent less; Hornady markets it for target shooting.
