Product Overview
Nosler markets its 115-grain Ballistic Tip Hunting load for what it calls "America's most popular game." It uses Nosler's Ballistic Tip, a polymer-tipped spitzer hunting bullet rated at a G1 BC of .453, and leaves the muzzle at 3,000 fps.
Compared with Hornady's 117-grain Superformance SST, the Nosler starts 110 fps slower but drifts less in wind. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph crosswind pushes the Nosler about 19 inches sideways and the Superformance about 21. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Nosler drops about 47 inches at 500 and the Superformance about 46. The Superformance also kicks about 8 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with HSM's 115-grain Trophy Gold, which loads Berger's VLD Hunting bullet, the Nosler is a twin at the muzzle: both leave at the same speed with the same energy and kick the same.
Buy the Nosler if you want a polymer-tipped bullet that holds up in wind at 400 and 500 yards, with a little less recoil than a 117-grain load. Pick the Superformance if you want the fastest start and slightly less drop. Pick the Trophy Gold if you prefer Berger's bullet at the same speed and recoil. Black Hills Gold's 117-grain SST is the other fast choice at 3,100 fps. If recoil matters most, Winchester's 85-grain Ballistic Silvertip kicks about 35 percent less in the same rifle.
