How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

HSM markets its Game King 117-grain load for hunting elk, deer and other big game at extended range. It is loaded with Sierra's GameKing spitzer boat tail, a pointed soft-point bullet with a tapered base, and it leaves the muzzle at 3,000 fps with 2,340 ft-lbs of energy.

Compared with HSM's own Tipping Point 117-grain SST, the Game King is the same load at the muzzle: both leave at 3,000 fps and kick the same in the same rifle. The difference is the bullet. The Tipping Point uses Hornady's SST, a polymer-tipped hunting bullet, where the Game King uses Sierra's soft point. Compared with Winchester's Deer Season XP 117-grain, the Game King gives up speed. The Winchester leaves the muzzle at 3,100 fps, and it kicks about 4 percent harder in the same rifle.

Buy the Game King if you want Sierra's GameKing bullet in a load its maker names for elk as well as deer. Pick Winchester's Deer Season XP 117-grain if you hunt deer and want the extra speed; Winchester markets it for whitetail, mule and blacktail deer. Pick HSM's Tipping Point 117-grain SST if you prefer a polymer-tipped bullet at the same speed. If recoil matters most, Winchester's 85-grain Ballistic Silvertip leaves the muzzle at 3,470 fps and kicks about 37 percent less in the same rifle.

Strengths
  • HSM markets it for elk as well as deer, where Winchester pitches its Deer Season XP 117-grain at deer
  • Leaves the muzzle 25 fps faster than Fiocchi's Field Dynamics 117-grain PSP
  • Kicks about 1 percent less than Federal's Power-Shok 117-grain in the same rifle
Limitations
  • Federal's Power-Shok 117-grain leaves the muzzle 30 fps faster
  • Winchester's Deer Season XP 117-grain carries 156 ft-lbs more at the muzzle
  • Kicks about 1 percent harder than Fiocchi's Field Dynamics 117-grain PSP in the same rifle
