Hornady markets its Superformance 117-grain SST for medium game. The SST is Hornady's polymer-tipped hunting bullet, rated at a G1 BC of .390, and this load starts it at 3,110 fps.
Compared with Hornady's own 117-grain American Whitetail, a conventional soft point with a boat tail, the Superformance starts 120 fps faster and stays ahead. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the line of fire pushes the Superformance about 21 inches sideways and the American Whitetail about 23. Zeroed at 200 yards, the Superformance drops about 39 inches at 500 and the American Whitetail about 42. The Superformance kicks about 5 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Winchester's 117-grain Deer Season XP, the Superformance starts at almost the same speed but falls behind with distance: the same wind pushes the Deer Season XP about 18 inches at 500 yards, and from the same 200-yard zero it drops about 36.
Buy the Superformance if you hunt medium game and want a polymer-tipped bullet with a fast start. Pick the Deer Season XP if you expect longer shots; it drifts and drops less at 400 and 500 yards. Pick the American Whitetail if you prefer a conventional soft point and a little less recoil. Black Hills Gold's 117-grain SST loads the same bullet at nearly the same speed and kicks the same.
