The .243 Winchester has two maximum point blank ranges because it does two jobs. For deer with a 100gr bullet at 2,960 fps and an 8" vital zone, zero at 270 yards, sight in 3.3" high at 100 with the scope 1.5" over the bore, and hold dead-on to 316 yards. For coyotes and varmints with a 58gr V-Max at 3,650 fps and a 4" zone, zero at 243 yards, sight in 1.6" high, and hold dead-on to 281 yards. The same rifle cannot carry both zeros at once, and a deer zero on the varmint load puts the bullet 4" over a coyote at 175 yards.

A 95gr Fusion at 2,980 fps sits between them on the deer zone, 320 yards from a 273-yard zero; on a 10" zone the 100gr load reaches 344.

Key terms

Near zero
Where the bullet first climbs up through the line of sight. It starts below the sight, because the sight sits above the barrel.
Far zero
Where it falls back down through the line of sight. A "200-yard zero" is the far zero; the near zero comes with it.
Max ordinate
The highest the bullet gets above the line of sight, between the two crossings. This is what makes a zero shoot high in the middle.
Point blank range (MPBR)
The zero that keeps the whole arc inside a vital zone for the longest distance, so you can aim at the centre and hold dead-on.

What MPBR Means in the Field

Maximum point blank range is the longest distance over which a centre hold on the vitals still hits, found by letting the bullet peak half a zone above the line of sight so it can fall half a zone below at the end. The catch with the .243 is that the vital zone changes with the season. An 8" deer zone gives the 100gr load a 4" peak at 151 yards and a 316-yard far edge; a 4" coyote zone gives the 58gr load a 2" peak at 145 yards and a 281-yard far edge. Each is right for its animal and wrong for the other.

The light varmint bullets that make the .243 so flat are also the ones the wind moves most. At 300 yards a 58gr V-Max drifts about 12" in a 10 mph crosswind, three times the margin a 4" zone leaves you; even the 100gr bullet drifts 8" or so. MPBR tells you the drop is handled; it says nothing about drift, and on a coyote at the edge of a 4" window the wind decides the shot. Range, read the wind, and treat the far edge as where holding over begins.

Close in, neither zone has a near edge on a 1.5" scope; the windows start at the muzzle. What the .243 shooter has to watch is switching loads without re-zeroing. Sighted 3.3" high at 100 for deer, the 58gr load is not on the same zero, and a varmint rifle that goes deer hunting needs the deer zero set with deer bullets, on paper, before the season.

How Sight Height Affects Your MPBR

With the scope 1.5" over the bore the windows above apply. The .243 is a common AR-10 chambering too, and at that rifle's 2.6" optic height the deer MPBR moves out: zero at 281 yards instead of 270, far edge at 327 instead of 316, sight-in 2.9" high at 100 instead of 3.3". The table below has both. Eleven yards, from an inch of sight height, because a taller sight line lets the bullet use more of its arc above the line of sight before the peak.

The varmint zone reacts the same way but adds a near edge: a 2.6" sight line starts the bullet outside a 4" zone and it does not climb into it until about 10 yards. On a bolt gun the 4" window starts at the muzzle. Solve the zero for the rifle and the bullet you are actually carrying; the .243's two personalities do not share one number.
