About This Firearm
The Ruger MAX-9 holds 12 rounds in an 18.4 oz frame that measures just 0.95" wide. That width makes it the thinnest micro-compact 9mm on the market. The optic-ready slide, tritium fiber optic front sight, and manual safety come standard. Ruger ships two magazines: one 12-round flush fit and one 10-round with a finger extension floorplate.
The glass-filled nylon frame and through-hardened alloy steel slide keep weight down without sacrificing durability. The 3.2" barrel with 1:10" right-hand twist and six grooves sits in the middle of the micro-compact range. The 5.5 lb trigger pull is predictable, and the integrated trigger safety plus internal striker blocker work alongside the external manual safety. At 6.0" overall length, it disappears in an IWB holster under an untucked shirt.

Strengths & Limitations
- 0.95" width is the thinnest in the micro-compact class, noticeably slimmer than the Taurus GX4 at 1.08"
- Optic-ready slide and tritium fiber optic front sight come standard, features the GX4 omits entirely
- Manual safety is permanent. The frame is machined for the lever, and removing it leaves a visible hole with no clean delete option
- Black oxide slide finish is less corrosion-resistant than the nitride or Melonite finishes on competing guns
- Ships with one 12-round and one 10-round magazine, so most owners immediately need to buy an additional 12-round mag

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remove the manual safety on the MAX-9?
No. The frame is machined to accept the safety lever, and removing it leaves a visible hole. There is no factory delete kit or plug available. If you decide later that you do not want a manual safety, you would need a new frame. Train with the safety engaged until disengaging it becomes automatic during your draw stroke.
What is the break-in period for the MAX-9?
Ruger does not specify a break-in period, but owners commonly report the slide becomes smoother after 200-300 rounds. The recoil spring is stiff from the factory, which can make the slide hard to rack initially. Some owners also note the trigger smooths out after the first 500 rounds as internal surfaces polish themselves.
