About This Firearm
The Springfield XD Service 4" in .40 S&W is the 10-round CA-compliant version of the original XD service pistol — Croatian HS2000 design, distributed in the U.S. by Springfield Armory since 2002. The USA trigger system (Ultra Safety Assurance) adds a grip safety on top of the trigger-blade safety, which gives the XD two independent passive safeties before the gun fires. Capacity is 10+1, the barrel is 4", and the weight is 30 oz empty.
For California, Massachusetts, and other restricted-magazine jurisdictions, this is one of the few new .40 service pistols still on the roster — the older XD line uses the original USA trigger that was on the roster before 2014, which is a meaningful advantage over newer designs that have not been certified. For non-restricted buyers wanting a 15- or 16-round .40, the Glock G22 Gen5 or the S&W M&P 40 M2.0 are better starting points. The honest take on .40 in 2026: 9mm carries more ammo, costs less per round, and offers better recoil control — but for buyers committed to .40 in a restricted state, the XD Service is one of the most affordable and most available roster-compliant options.

Strengths & Limitations
- California-roster-legal .40 service pistol — one of the few new options in restricted states
- Grip safety plus trigger blade safety give two independent passive safeties, useful for buyers who prefer redundant safety systems
- Long Springfield service history and broad aftermarket holster support carry over from the original XD line
- 5.5 lb USA trigger is heavier and less crisp than the newer META trigger on the XD-M Elite series
- 10-round capacity limits the XD Service to restricted-state buyers; non-restricted buyers should look at higher-capacity options
- Standard XD line has been pushed aside by the XD-M Elite for most non-roster customers, so Springfield's product focus is on the newer platform

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the first upgrade most XD Service owners do?
Sights are the most common first upgrade — the factory white dot front and 2-dot rear are functional but not ideal for low-light defensive use. Trijicon HD XR or AmeriGlo Hackathorn night sights are the most popular replacements. The second-most-common upgrade is the trigger; PRP and Powder River Precision sell drop-in trigger kits that reduce pre-travel and shorten reset on the USA trigger system.
Will high-capacity XD Service magazines fit if I leave California?
Yes — the 10-round factory mag is just the magazine; the gun itself is mechanically identical to non-restricted XD Service models. Buyers who move out of state can drop in 12-round or 13-round factory .40 XD magazines (sold by Springfield for non-restricted states) and run the gun at full capacity. The frame, barrel, and magwell are not capacity-limited at the hardware level.
