About This Firearm
The Witness Steel is a CZ 75 clone made by Tanfoglio in Italy and imported by European American Armory. That CZ 75 lineage is the interesting part. The steel frame weighs 33 oz and the DA/SA trigger gives you a long double-action first pull followed by a shorter single-action for subsequent shots. In a category dominated by 1911s and polymer strikers, the Witness is the only 10mm with a traditional DA/SA action and a frame-mounted safety that can be carried cocked-and-locked or hammer-down.
Capacity is where the Witness separates from the 1911s. The double-stack magazine holds 14 rounds, which is 6 more than every 10mm 1911 in this group. The Glock G20 Gen5 MOS holds 15 rounds but weighs 4.6 oz less and uses a polymer frame. The EAA's steel frame absorbs more felt recoil, and the Wonder Finish (a proprietary chrome-like coating) provides decent corrosion protection. The chrome-lined barrel is another durability feature uncommon at this tier.
The Witness is not a polished gun. Owners report the stock synthetic grips are slippery, the single included magazine is stingy, and the fixed front sight limits precision work. But 14 rounds of 10mm in a steel-framed DA/SA pistol is a combination nobody else offers. For shooters who grew up on CZ 75s or Berettas and want that manual-of-arms in 10mm, the Witness is the only game.
Best For
Strengths & Limitations
- Fourteen rounds of 10mm is 6 more than any 1911 in this caliber. Only the polymer-framed Glock G20 (15 rounds) and Springfield XD-M Elite (16 rounds) hold more
- The steel frame at 33 oz splits the difference between heavy 1911s (35-43 oz) and light polymer guns (28-31 oz), giving decent recoil control without excessive weight
- DA/SA with a frame-mounted safety lets you carry cocked-and-locked or hammer-down. No other 10mm in this group offers that flexibility
- Ships with one magazine, and aftermarket Witness magazines in 10mm are harder to find than Glock or 1911 magazines
- No optic cut. The fixed front sight and windage-only adjustable rear limit precision shooting compared to guns with fully adjustable sights

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I find spare magazines for the EAA Witness 10mm?
Tanfoglio/Witness magazines in 10mm are less common than Glock or 1911 magazines. EAA sells factory replacements through their website, and Mec-Gar (which makes the factory magazines) sells direct as well. CZ 97-pattern magazines do not fit despite the visual similarity. Expect to pay more per magazine than Glock equivalents, and keep two or three spares on hand since availability fluctuates.
Can the Witness Steel be converted to .45 ACP with a barrel swap?
Tanfoglio designed the large-frame Witness to accept caliber conversion kits. A .45 ACP conversion requires a new barrel, slide, and magazine. EAA sells complete conversion kits, though availability varies. This is one of the Witness platform's real strengths. Buying one frame and swapping between 10mm and .45 ACP gives you two guns for less than buying both outright.
