Product Overview
FN Herstal's SS197SR 40-grain is a V-Max 5.7x28mm load made for target shooting. The V-Max is a sporting bullet with a polymer tip set into the nose. It leaves the muzzle at 1,738 fps with 268 ft-lbs.
Zeroed at 25 yards, it sits 0.3 inch low at 50 and arrives there at 1,571 fps with 219 ft-lbs. The caliber's three 40-grain expanding loads recoil within a few percent of each other, so moving between them changes almost nothing in the hand.
If you're cross-shopping, Speer's Gold Dot 40-grain starts 62 fps faster at 1,800 fps and is the one hollow point among the three. Fiocchi's Hyperformance 40-grain also carries a polymer tip, starts 12 fps faster and holds 4 ft-lbs more at the muzzle.
