FN Herstal SS197SR 5.7x28mm 40gr V-Max Ammo Ballistics
Brass Case • V-Max • MPN: SS197SR
Solved from this product's advertised 1738 fps, 40gr bullet and G1 BC 0.200, with the sight 0.5" over the bore at standard conditions. Compare every zero for 5.7x28mm.
How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 4" vital zone, ±2" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 100 yards.
5.7x28mm 40gr with a 10-yard zero
Zeroed at 10 yards with a 0.5" sight height, this load crosses the line of sight at 10 and 75 yards, peaks +0.7" at 43 yards, and is +0.7" at 50 and -1.7" at 100 yards.

Product Overview
FN Herstal's SS197SR drives a 40-grain V-Max polymer-tip bullet at 1,738 fps and delivers 268 ft-lbs at the muzzle. The V-Max is a sporting bullet rather than a practice round. From a 25-yard zero it is 0.3 inches low at 50 yards and 3.6 inches low at 100, so it needs little holdover at any distance a pistol is normally shot. Among the 40-grain expanding loads it also has the lightest recoil, in a cartridge that already moves the gun very little.
Speed is where the SS197SR gives ground. Speer Gold Dot 40-grain JHP is the fast one of the group at 1,800 fps against the FN's 1,738, and Fiocchi Hyperformance 40-grain polymer tip sits between them, 12 fps faster than the FN. The trade for the Gold Dot's speed shows up in recoil: in the same pistol the SS197SR produces about 7 percent less recoil energy than the Speer. All three share the same bullet weight and sit in a narrow band at the muzzle, so the choice comes down to how much recoil you want for how much speed.
Buy the SS197SR if you want a polymer-tipped sporting load with the softest recoil of these three. Shooters who want even less should look at FN Herstal SS195LF lead-free, whose 27-grain bullet produces about 47 percent less recoil energy than the SS197SR in the same pistol. For practice, Federal American Eagle 40-grain TMJ produces about 8 percent less recoil energy and leaves the muzzle 83 fps slower, so expect it to feel a little softer than this load.
- About 2 percent less recoil energy than Fiocchi Hyperformance 40-grain in the same pistol, for nearly the same speed
- Only 0.3 inches low at 50 yards from a 25-yard zero, so no hold is needed at normal pistol distances
- 3.6 inches low at 100 yards from a 25-yard zero, a flat path for a pistol load
- Gives up 20 ft-lbs at the muzzle to Speer Gold Dot 40-grain and 4 ft-lbs to Fiocchi Hyperformance 40-grain
- The slowest of the three 40-grain expanding loads, behind both Speer Gold Dot 40-grain and Fiocchi Hyperformance 40-grain
- A sporting V-Max rather than a defensive design like Speer Gold Dot 40-grain
