Federal American Eagle 5.7x28mm 40gr TMJ Ammo Ballistics
Brass Case • TMJ • MPN: AE5728A
Solved from this product's advertised 1655 fps, 40gr bullet and G1 BC 0.117, with the sight 0.5" over the bore at standard conditions. Compare every zero for 5.7x28mm.
How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 4" vital zone, ±2" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 100 yards.

Product Overview
Federal's American Eagle 40-grain TMJ leaves the muzzle at 1,655 fps with 243 ft-lbs of energy. The TMJ bullet is fully enclosed, with no exposed lead, and it is built for practice. From a 25-yard zero it prints 0.5 inches low at 50 yards and 4.9 inches low at 100, and it is still moving at 1,391 fps when it reaches the 50-yard line. That is a flat path for a pistol cartridge, and a bullet this light gives the gun very little recoil to manage.
The load to measure it against is Fiocchi Range Dynamics 40-grain FMJ, the other 40-grain ball load for this caliber. The Fiocchi leaves the muzzle 45 fps faster at 1,700 fps and carries 14 ft-lbs more energy. In the same pistol the American Eagle produces about 4 percent less recoil energy than the Fiocchi. Neither gap is large. Both loads use the same bullet weight, and the difference in speed is under 3 percent, so they sit close enough at the muzzle to share a practice session. The choice between them comes down to the bullet more than the numbers.
Buy American Eagle for drills, plinking and pistol-bay practice when you want the softer-shooting of the two 40-grain ball loads and a bullet with no exposed lead. If the load you want to practice for is FN Herstal SS197SR 40-grain V-Max, expect a difference: it leaves the muzzle 83 fps faster and produces about 9 percent more recoil energy than the American Eagle in the same pistol. Shooters running a suppressor should look at Fiocchi Subsonic 62-grain FMJ instead, which stays under the speed of sound at 1,050 fps.
- The fully enclosed TMJ leaves no lead exposed, where Fiocchi Range Dynamics 40-grain is a conventional FMJ
- Still moving at 1,184 fps at 100 yards from a pistol
- Stays within half an inch of the sights out to 50 yards from a 25-yard zero, so one hold covers the whole pistol bay
- Fiocchi Range Dynamics 40-grain is the faster and more energetic of the two 40-grain ball loads
- Keeps 125 ft-lbs at 100 yards, about half of its 243 ft-lbs at the muzzle
- Needs about 5 inches of holdover at 100 yards from a 25-yard zero
