Winchester's Bigbore .45 Colt sends a 250gr jacketed soft point at 845 fps, producing 396 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. That's a meaningful step up from standard-pressure plinking loads like the Winchester Super-X LFN at 750 fps and 312 ft-lbs. The JSP bullet expands on contact while retaining enough weight for decent penetration. This is still a standard-pressure load, so it's safe in all .45 Colt revolvers, but it sits near the top of what you can get without going +P.

The jacketed soft point design gives this load a real edge over lead-only bullets. On impact, the exposed lead tip mushrooms while the jacket controls expansion rate, preventing the bullet from breaking apart. This makes it far more effective on game or in defensive situations than a plain lead flat nose. The Ammo Inc 250gr JHP runs at similar velocity (842 fps, 394 ft-lbs) but with a hollow point that opens faster. The Bigbore's JSP splits the difference between controlled expansion and deep penetration.

Hunters carrying a .45 Colt revolver for deer, hogs, or javelina at close range will get the most from this load. It hits hard enough for broadside shots inside 50 yards on medium game. It also works as a woods-carry defensive round against coyotes, feral dogs, or similar threats. For lever-action rifle owners, the 250gr JSP at these velocities is a competent brush gun load for whitetail. If you need more power for larger or tougher animals, the DoubleTap +P loads push into entirely different energy territory, but they require a heavy-frame revolver.
