Product Overview
Underwood's +P 250-grain XTP JHP is a jacketed hollow point built for hunting, loaded to 1,400 fps and 1,088 ft-lbs in a nickel-plated brass case. Power factor is 350, more than twice the 165 USPSA major floor. From a 25-yard zero it drops 0.8 inch at 50 yards and 6.8 inches at 100. This is a +P load, and the maker restricts it to guns rated for it: large-frame Ruger revolvers and similar. Check your revolver's rating before you fire it.
Nothing in its comparison group is close. Remington HTP 230-grain JHP is 550 fps slower at the muzzle, and by 100 yards the gap is still 330 fps and 371 ft-lbs, with the HTP dropping 11.3 inches more. Federal Champion 225-grain LSWCHP trails by 570 fps at the muzzle and lands 12.1 inches lower at 100 yards. The standard-pressure 250-grain loads, Winchester Bigbore 250-grain JSP and Ammo Inc 250-grain JHP, are 555 and 558 fps slower, with 692 and 694 ft-lbs less energy. Winchester PDX1 Defender 225-grain JHP shares the HTP's 850 fps. The trade-off is recoil: in the same revolver the Underwood produces about 135 percent more recoil energy than the Bigbore, 174 percent more than the HTP and nearly three times the Federal Champion's.
Buy it for hunting with a large-frame Ruger or similar revolver rated for +P, where the energy at 100 yards matters. Anyone whose revolver is not rated for +P should stay with a standard-pressure load such as the Winchester Bigbore 250-grain JSP at 845 fps. For a defensive load in any .45 Colt revolver, Hornady Critical Defense 185-grain FTX runs 920 fps with about 73 percent less recoil energy in the same revolver.
- Keeps 677 ft-lbs at 100 yards, more than any load in its group carries at the muzzle, the Winchester Bigbore 250-grain JSP's 396 included
- Only 0.8 inch low at 50 yards from a 25-yard zero, against 2.7 inches for the Remington HTP 230-grain JHP
- Still moving at 1,104 fps at 100 yards, faster than the Federal Champion 225-grain LSWCHP leaves the muzzle at 830
- +P pressure rules it out of revolvers not rated for it; the Federal Champion 225-grain LSWCHP and every other load in its group are standard pressure
- About 187 percent more recoil energy than the Winchester PDX1 Defender 225-grain JHP in the same revolver
