Product Overview
Underwood's 225gr Soft Cast HP in .45 Colt runs at 1,050 fps with 551 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Unlike the hard cast version, this bullet uses a softer lead alloy with a hollow point cavity. The softer alloy allows the bullet to mushroom on impact, creating a wider wound channel while still penetrating deeply enough to reach vitals on medium game. The nickel-plated brass case handles moisture and humidity well for ammunition stored in a field bag or belt loop carrier.
The soft cast hollow point design splits the difference between full expansion hollow points and non-expanding hard cast bullets. A jacketed hollow point at these velocities might expand too quickly and under-penetrate on tough game, while a hard cast bullet passes straight through without transferring much energy. The soft cast HP opens up to roughly 1.5 times its original diameter while still holding together well enough to penetrate 18-24 inches in tissue. That combination of expansion and penetration is what hunters need for clean kills on deer-sized game.
This is a hunting load for medium game taken at revolver distances. Deer, feral hogs, and javelina are all within its effective range when shot placement is good. It works best in strong revolvers like the Ruger Blackhawk or Vaquero where the fixed sights can be regulated for this velocity. Shooters who want one load for deer season in their .45 Colt lever gun or revolver will find the soft cast HP offers a practical balance between wound channel size and penetration depth.
- Soft cast hollow point expands on impact while maintaining adequate penetration depth
- 551 ft-lbs of energy is enough for deer, hogs, and other medium game
- Balances wound channel size and penetration better than pure hard cast or jacketed HP
- Standard pressure load safe in modern Ruger and similar heavy-frame revolvers
- Soft lead can cause more barrel fouling than jacketed or hard cast alternatives
- Expansion is less predictable than engineered jacketed hollow points
- Not rated for +P so energy is limited compared to Underwood's hotter offerings
- The soft alloy may deform on heavy bone like bear shoulders, limiting penetration
