Product Overview
Federal Champion's .45 Colt load is a 225-grain lead semi-wadcutter hollow point, a plain lead bullet that Federal sells as a defensive load, at 830 fps for 344 ft-lbs. Power factor is 187, over the 165 USPSA major floor. From a 25-yard zero the bullet is 2.8 inches low at 50 yards and 18.9 inches low at 100. The brass case is reloadable.
It is the slowest and lightest-recoiling load of its group. Federal American Eagle 225-grain JSP is 30 fps and 25 ft-lbs ahead with about 6 percent more recoil energy in the same revolver. Sierra Sports Master 225-grain JHP and Winchester PDX1 Defender 225-grain JHP each run 850 fps and 361 ft-lbs, 20 fps and 17 ft-lbs ahead, with about 4 percent more recoil. Remington HTP 230-grain JHP is 20 fps ahead for about 9 percent more recoil. Fort Scott Munitions 225-grain TUI is the fastest of the set at 869 fps and 377 ft-lbs, with about 8 percent more recoil.
Buy it if you want the lightest-recoiling load in this set for a revolver not rated for +P and are fine with plain lead rather than a jacketed bullet. For practice at the same bullet weight with still less recoil, Fiocchi Training Dynamics 225-grain CMJ at 750 fps recoils about 15 percent less in the same revolver. Underwood's Extreme Defender 135-grain goes the other way on energy: 596 ft-lbs, 252 more than the Champion, with about 12 percent less recoil.
