Product Overview

Magtech's Cowboy Action load uses a 240-grain lead flat nose, a plain lead bullet loaded mild for cowboy action matches. It leaves the muzzle at 725 fps with 280 ft-lbs of energy. The heavy bullet carries the power factor to 174, which clears the 165 major floor even at this modest speed. From a 25-yard zero it drops 3.8 inches at 50 yards and 24.8 inches at 100, where it is still moving 675 fps.

It is the slowest of the three cowboy loads here and the heaviest, and that weight drives both its power factor and its recoil. Fiocchi Cowboy Action 210 starts 25 fps faster and produces about 19 percent less recoil energy in the same revolver, but its power factor of 157.5 sits 16.5 below the Magtech and scores minor. HSM Cowboy Action starts 125 fps faster and still produces about 11 percent less recoil, with a power factor 4 points lower that also makes major. The Magtech is the one to pick when a heavier push and the widest major margin of the three matter more than the softest recoil.

Buy it for cowboy action matches if you like a heavy bullet, or if you also shoot games that score major and want one load for both. Shooters who want the lightest recoil over a long match day should pick the Fiocchi Cowboy Action 210 instead. Where an indoor range restricts exposed lead, Magtech 240 FMJ keeps the same bullet weight and runs only 3 fps slower, with recoil within 1 percent in the same revolver.

Strengths
  • Clears the 165 major floor by 9, where Fiocchi Cowboy Action 210 scores minor
  • 18 ft-lbs more muzzle energy than Fiocchi Cowboy Action 210
  • Keeps 261 ft-lbs of energy at 50 yards
Limitations
  • 41 ft-lbs less muzzle energy than HSM Cowboy Action despite the heavier bullet
  • Plain lead bullet, like HSM Cowboy Action and Fiocchi Cowboy Action 210; some indoor ranges restrict exposed lead
  • Heaviest recoil of the three cowboy loads, so Fiocchi Cowboy Action 210 is the easier choice over a long match
