How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 4" vital zone, ±2" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 100 yards.

Product Overview

Fiocchi's Cowboy Action load uses a 210-grain lead flat point, a plain lead bullet loaded mild for cowboy action matches. It leaves the muzzle at 750 fps with 262 ft-lbs. Power factor is 157.5, which scores minor and falls short of the 165 major floor. From a 25-yard zero it drops 3.5 inches at 50 yards and 23.2 inches at 100.

Against the other two cowboy loads on this site, this is the soft one. HSM Cowboy Action 200 starts 100 fps faster, and this load produces about 10 percent less recoil energy than the HSM in the same revolver. Magtech's 240-grain cowboy load runs 25 fps slower but carries a bullet 30 grains heavier, and this load produces about 19 percent less recoil energy than the Magtech. Both of the others make major, the HSM at a power factor of 170 and the Magtech at 174, so this is the only one of the three that scores minor. That is the trade in one line: less power for an easier gun to run through a long stage. This load's own path is short: by 100 yards it has slowed to 696 fps and carries 226 ft-lbs, and the 23-inch drop there puts that distance out of reach for practical shooting.

Buy it for cowboy action matches where light recoil helps over a long day and power factor is not scored. Shooters who need major should pick the HSM Cowboy Action instead. A plain lead cowboy bullet is not built for self-defense; for that, Fiocchi 200-grain SJHP is a hollow point that runs 150 fps faster than this load.

Strengths
  • Lowest recoil energy of the three cowboy loads in the same revolver, below both HSM Cowboy Action 200 and Magtech's 240-grain cowboy load
  • Power factor clears the 125 minor floor by 32.5
  • Keeps 243 ft-lbs of energy at 50 yards
Limitations
  • Power factor is 7.5 points short of the 165 major floor, which both HSM Cowboy Action 200 and Magtech's 240-grain cowboy load clear
  • Lowest muzzle energy of the three: 59 ft-lbs under the HSM and 18 ft-lbs under the Magtech
  • Plain lead bullet, like both other cowboy loads; some indoor ranges restrict exposed lead
