Product Overview
Magtech loads a 240-grain FMJ to 722 fps and 278 ft-lbs. The heavy bullet lifts it to a power factor of 173, which clears the 165 major floor even at this modest speed. From a 25-yard zero the bullet drops 3.8 inches at 50 yards and 25.1 inches at 100, so this is a close-range load, and it loses little speed along the way: 696 fps at 50 yards.
Its one close match is Underwood 245 FMJ FN, and the two are far apart. The Underwood starts 228 fps faster from a bullet only 5 grains heavier, and it produces about 62 percent more recoil energy in the same revolver. That gap is the reason to choose the Magtech. It gives a slow, mild push that suits long sessions at the range and shooters new to a big-bore revolver, where the Underwood is a full-power load. Power factor tells the same story from the other side: 173 for the Magtech against 233 for the Underwood, and both make major.
Buy it for high-round-count practice in a .44 Special revolver, or for introducing someone to a big-bore gun. Cowboy shooters should look at Magtech's 240-grain LFN cowboy load instead: same bullet weight, a plain lead flat nose, and recoil within 1 percent in the same revolver. Anyone training for a heavier carry load and wanting practice recoil to match should step up to the Underwood.
