Product Overview
This is a reduced-power .44 Magnum: Federal's HST 230-grain jacketed hollow point leaves the muzzle at 1,085 fps with 601 ft-lbs. HST is Federal's defensive hollow point, meant to expand on impact. Power factor is 250, still over the USPSA major floor of 165. From a 25-yard zero it sits 1.5 inches low at 50 yards and 11.0 inches low at 100, where it has slowed to 957 fps and 468 ft-lbs. It leaves the muzzle below the speed of sound, which only matters if you run it through a suppressed lever gun.
Every 240-grain load it is compared with carries more energy and more recoil. Armscor 240 is the nearest, with 40 ft-lbs more at the muzzle and about 11 percent more recoil energy in the same revolver. Federal's own Power-Shok 240 adds 205 ft-lbs and drops 2.4 inches less at 100 yards. Black Hills 240 adds 245 ft-lbs for about 41 percent more recoil. Magtech 240 SJSP is in another class altogether: 793 ft-lbs more at the muzzle and about 118 percent more recoil energy, more than double the HST.
Buy this if you keep a .44 Magnum for self-defense and want the softest full-size hollow point in the set; Armscor 240 is the only load anywhere near it on recoil. Hunters should look elsewhere: Hornady Backcountry Defense 240-grain hard cast delivers 1,398 ft-lbs, 797 more than the HST, and among the loads compared here Hornady LEVERevolution 225 carries 392 more at the muzzle.
