Product Overview

Federal American Eagle .40 S&W 165gr FMJ pushes a lighter bullet at 1,130 fps, generating 468 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. That is notably hotter than most 165-grain range loads in this caliber. The Winchester 165gr FMJ runs at 1,060 fps and the PMC Bronze at 989 fps, so the American Eagle sits well above both in raw velocity. Brass cases and a standard FMJ nose round out a straightforward range cartridge.

The lighter 165-grain bullet paired with higher velocity produces a snappier recoil impulse compared to 180-grain loads. Some shooters prefer this because it trains them to manage a faster slide cycle. If your carry gun runs a 165-grain defensive hollow point, this FMJ load will approximate that same feel better than a 180-grain training round would. The velocity difference between this and the Federal 155gr American Eagle is only 30 fps, but you get an extra 10 grains of bullet weight.

This ammo works well for structured range practice, law enforcement qualification courses, and action-pistol training drills. The higher velocity also means slightly flatter trajectory at 25 yards, which can help when working on precision at distance. Competitive shooters in IDPA's Stock Service Pistol division will find it reliable enough for match use, though it is not loaded to make power factor by a wide margin.

Strengths
  • 1,130 fps is significantly faster than the CCI Blazer 165gr (1,050 fps) and PMC Bronze 165gr (989 fps), giving a flatter trajectory at typical pistol distances
  • 468 ft-lbs of muzzle energy is the second highest among 165gr .40 S&W range loads, behind only the Remington UMC
  • Brass cases are reloadable and extract cleanly from a wide range of pistol models
  • The 165-grain weight closely matches popular defensive hollow points in .40 S&W, making it a practical training analog
Limitations
  • Higher velocity means snappier recoil compared to the softer-shooting PMC Bronze or CCI Blazer in the same weight class
  • FMJ nose offers zero expansion, limiting this strictly to range and training use
  • Costs more per round than aluminum-cased CCI Blazer, which does the same basic job at a lower price
