The lightest ball load in Federal's American Eagle .40 S&W line is this 155-grain FMJ, which leaves the muzzle at 1,160 fps with 463 ft-lbs of energy. Power factor is 180, over the 165 USPSA major floor with room for a short barrel. From a 25-yard zero the bullet sits 1.3 inches low at 50 yards and 10.1 inches low at 100.
Among the 165-grain ball loads it is compared with, the 155 is the fast one but not the hard kicker. It leaves 100 fps ahead of Winchester's Range 165, 30 fps ahead of American Eagle's own 165 and 10 fps behind Remington UMC 165. Recoil does not follow speed here, because the heavier bullets carry more momentum. In the same pistol the American Eagle 165 produces about 8 percent more recoil energy than this load and the UMC about 12 percent more. Winchester Range 165 is the only one of the three that kicks less, and only by about 3 percent.
Buy it if you carry a 155-grain hollow point and want practice ammo that feels the same. Hornady Custom 155 XTP leaves at 1,180 fps, 20 fps faster than this load, and no ball load in the set matches it that closely. It also suits a USPSA shooter who wants major from a light, fast bullet. If your carry load is a 165, or you prefer the slower push of a standard-weight .40, Winchester Range 165 at 1,060 fps is the closer feel, and Remington UMC 165 at 1,150 fps is the choice for the most energy from a 165.
