Product Overview

Federal American Eagle's 155gr .40 S&W FMJ is the lightest standard loading in the caliber. At 1,160 fps and 463 ft-lbs of energy, it is the fastest round in the American Eagle .40 lineup. The lighter bullet generates a sharper, snappier recoil pulse compared to 165gr or 180gr loads. Some shooters prefer that feel. Others find the heavier bullets easier to track. Try both and see what works for your hands and your gun.

The 155gr weight has a specific niche in competition. USPSA shooters running .40 S&W for Major power factor need to clear 165,000 (bullet weight in grains times velocity in fps). This load clears that threshold at 155 x 1,160 = 179,800. That leaves comfortable margin. The lighter bullet also means faster slide cycling and quicker sight recovery between shots, which matters when you are running a stage against the clock.

For general range work, this is a quality Federal product with good consistency. It runs hotter than Winchester 165gr FMJ (1,060 fps, 412 ft-lbs) and Remington UMC 165gr (1,150 fps, 485 ft-lbs). The brass cases reload well. Federal's primers are known for reliable ignition even in cold weather. If you shoot a full-size duty gun like a Glock 22 or SIG P229, the 155gr load will feel noticeably flatter and faster than the standard 180gr training rounds.

Strengths
  • 1,160 fps is the fastest .40 S&W range load in the American Eagle line, giving a flat trajectory
  • 155gr weight clears USPSA Major power factor with margin for competition use
  • Lighter bullet means quicker slide cycling and faster sight recovery
  • Federal primers are consistently reliable across temperature ranges
Limitations
  • 155gr is an uncommon weight that does not match most .40 S&W duty or defense loads (typically 165gr or 180gr)
  • Sharper recoil impulse than heavier bullets, which some shooters find less comfortable over long sessions
  • FMJ projectile limits this to range use only
