Product Overview
Remington's HTP puts an 88-grain jacketed hollow point out at 990 fps with 191 ft-lbs, the slowest muzzle velocity in this comparison and, by 2 ft-lbs, the second-lowest energy. Remington sells it as a personal-defense load. Power factor is 87. From a 25-yard zero the bullet is 1.9 inches low at 50 yards and 14.0 inches low at 100; a .380 is a close-range pistol and this load is no exception. The brass case is reloadable.
The 90-grain loads bracket it closely. Hornady Critical Defense and Hornady American Gunner run 1,000 fps and 200 ft-lbs, 10 fps and 9 ft-lbs ahead, with about 7 percent more recoil energy in the same pistol. Speer Gold Dot is 50 fps faster at 1,040 fps and carries 25 ft-lbs more, for about 14 percent more recoil. Federal Train + Protect 85-grain goes the other way at 1,000 fps and 189 ft-lbs, with about 5 percent less recoil energy than the Remington. Underwood +P 90-grain stands apart at 1,200 fps and 288 ft-lbs, 97 ft-lbs more than the HTP with about 45 percent more recoil.
Buy the HTP if you want a plain jacketed hollow point at the soft end of the .380 recoil scale and do not need the Gold Dot's extra 25 ft-lbs. It sits close to ball ammunition: PMC Bronze 90-grain FMJ at 961 fps produces recoil energy within 1 percent of the HTP in the same pistol, so a range session with the PMC feels like the Remington. If recoil is still too much, Black Hills HoneyBadger 60-grain at 1,150 fps has about 40 percent less recoil energy. If you want more energy without going +P, the Gold Dot is the answer.
