Federal Train + Protect 85-grain VHP is a jacketed hollow point .380 Auto load made for practice and defense alike. Federal calls the bullet a Versatile Hollow Point, and at 85 grains it is the lightest of the loads compared. It leaves the muzzle at 1,000 fps with 189 ft-lbs.
From a 25-yard zero it is 1.9 inches low at 50. Its estimated recoil of 1.7 ft-lbs in a compact pistol is the lightest of the loads compared, about 16 percent under Speer Gold Dot 90-grain.
If you're cross-shopping, Hornady Critical Defense 90-grain FTX runs the same 1,000 fps from five more grains of bullet, with 11 ft-lbs more at the muzzle. Remington HTP 88-grain is 10 fps slower with 2 ft-lbs more.
