Product Overview
Remington's UMC 158gr LRN is a budget-friendly range load that uses the classic .38 Special bullet weight. The 158-grain lead round nose at 755 fps is one of the mildest-shooting loads in the caliber. Recoil is almost nonexistent in medium and full-size revolvers, and even lightweight J-frame snubnoses stay manageable. Shooters who are building fundamentals or recovering from a flinch will benefit from this soft impulse.
The 158-grain LRN has been a standard .38 Special loading for over a century. It works in every revolver chambered for the cartridge, from vintage Smith & Wesson Model 10s to modern Ruger SP101s. The round also functions in .357 Magnum revolvers and .38 Special lever-action rifles. Brass cases are boxer-primed and reloadable. Remington's UMC line is built for volume shooting, so the components are straightforward but consistent.
At 200 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, this is the lightest-hitting 158-grain .38 Special load on the market. Federal's American Eagle 158gr LRN runs at 770 fps with 208 ft-lbs, and the HSM Cowboy Action 158gr RNFP pushes 840 fps with 248 ft-lbs. Remington's load sits at the bottom of that range, which is actually a feature for pure target work. Less energy means less wear on the shooter during long practice sessions.
- 755 fps produces the mildest recoil of any 158-grain .38 Special load available
- Traditional 158-grain bullet weight trains the same point of aim as common defensive loads
- Budget pricing makes it practical for high-volume practice sessions
- Brass cases are boxer-primed and reloadable
- Lead round nose deposits fouling in the barrel that requires solvent and brushing to remove
- Banned at many indoor ranges that restrict exposed lead projectiles
- 200 ft-lbs of muzzle energy is the lowest among 158-grain .38 Special options
- Remington's UMC quality control has been inconsistent in recent production runs
