Barnes loads the VOR-TX .357 Mag with a 140-grain XPB, a solid copper hollow point with no lead core, for shooters who want or are required to run lead-free ammunition. It leaves the muzzle at 1,265 fps with 498 ft-lbs of energy. Power factor is 177, over the USPSA major floor of 165. From a 25-yard zero the bullet sits 1.0 inch low at 50 yards and 8.4 inches low at 100.
Among the expanding loads from 125 to 145 grains it is a middle-weight, middle-speed choice. Hornady Critical Duty 135-grain is 10 fps faster but 11 ft-lbs behind, with about 6 percent less recoil energy in the same revolver. Winchester Silvertip 145-grain goes the other way, 25 fps faster and 38 ft-lbs ahead, with about 11 percent more recoil. Remington HTP 125-grain leaves 185 fps faster, yet its recoil energy lands within about 1 percent of the Barnes, so the lighter, faster bullet kicks the same. The wide gap is to Hornady LEVERevolution 140-grain, the same bullet weight loaded 175 fps faster for 147 ft-lbs more and about 25 percent more recoil energy.
Buy this for a revolver that has to run lead-free, or for a hunter who wants a 140-grain bullet without the LEVERevolution's recoil and accepts the smaller energy figure that comes with it. If muzzle energy from a 140-grain bullet is the goal, the LEVERevolution's 645 ft-lbs is the pick. For plain range work, Fiocchi 142-grain FMJ-TC runs 1,420 fps and 636 ft-lbs, but it produces about 26 percent more recoil energy than this load in the same revolver, so it will not feel like it.
