About This Firearm
Smith & Wesson's pitch for the Volunteer line is a rifle nobody has to finish, and in 6mm ARC that means Williams folding sights, a B5 Systems SOPMOD stock and grip, a Radian ambidextrous charging handle and a PWS brake, all fitted at the factory. The barrel is 16.0 inches of 4140 steel with an Armornite finish and a 1:7.5 twist, target crowned and threaded. It weighs 7.42 lbs and has an MSRP of $1,589.
The forend is Smith & Wesson's own aluminum M-LOK tube running out to near the muzzle, and a short M-LOK rail section and Magpul rail covers come in the box, so a light or a hand stop does not start with a parts order. The sights fold flat, which lets an optic sit over them as a backup instead of replacing them. The stock adjusts out to a 14.5-inch pull. 6mm ARC runs on 6.5 Grendel pattern magazines and a cartridge-specific bolt, so spares are a deliberate order rather than a standard AR-15 magazine, and one 25-round magazine is included. The gas block is not adjustable.
The CMMG Resolute Mk4 in this caliber has an MSRP of $1,599.95, weighs 6.4 lbs and comes with an adjustable gas block but no sights.
Best For
Strengths & Limitations
- Name-brand furniture is standard rather than optional: B5 stock and grip, Radian ambidextrous charging handle, Williams folding sights and a PWS brake are all on the rifle as it leaves the factory.
- A 25-round ASC magazine, a short M-LOK rail section and Magpul rail covers come in the box, which covers the first accessories most buyers add.
- The barrel is target crowned, threaded 5/8-24 and Armornite finished inside and out, so a suppressor or a different brake threads straight on.
- There is no adjustable gas block, so tuning for a suppressor or for light loads means buying one and fitting it.
- At 7.42 lbs bare it is a pound heavier than the CMMG carbine in the same caliber, and a scope on top of a full-length rail adds more.
- Magazines are a 6.5 Grendel pattern part, so a standard AR-15 magazine will not feed it and spares have to be ordered specifically.

Frequently Asked Questions
What magazines does it take?
6.5 Grendel pattern magazines, and a 25-round ASC magazine comes with the rifle. Standard AR-15 magazines are the wrong internal geometry for 6mm ARC.
Does it come with sights?
Yes, Williams Gun Sight Company folding front and rear sights are fitted. They fold flat, so a scope or red dot can go over the top of them.
Is the barrel threaded, and what pitch?
Yes, 5/8-24, with a PWS brake fitted. The muzzle is also target crowned under the brake.
What else is in the box besides the magazine?
A short M-LOK rail section and Magpul Type-2 M-LOK rail covers. The forend is Smith & Wesson's own aluminum M-LOK tube, so the rail section is for anything that still needs Picatinny.
Is the gas system tunable for a suppressor?
Not as delivered. The gas block is fixed, so running it suppressed means either accepting more gas or fitting an adjustable block.
