Product Overview
Hornady tags its 123-grain SST 7.62x39 load for personal defense. The SST is Hornady's polymer-tipped bullet, a jacketed lead-core bullet with a pointed plastic tip. It has a G1 BC of .295 and leaves the muzzle at 2,350 fps with 1,508 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Prvi Partizan's 123-grain PSP, a pointed soft point, the SST starts 110 fps slower, but the gap narrows downrange. Zeroed at 100 yards, the SST drops about 24 inches at 300 yards and the PSP about 22. At 300 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each bullet about 15 inches sideways, which is how far off to the side it lands if you aim straight at the target. The PSP kicks about 5 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Federal's Fusion 123-grain, which Federal markets for medium game hunting, the SST is identical at the muzzle: both leave at 2,350 fps with 1,508 ft-lbs and kick the same in the same rifle. The bullet is the difference, a polymer tip against Federal's bonded soft point.
Buy the SST if you want Hornady's polymer-tipped bullet with a little less recoil than the faster Prvi Partizan load. Pick Prvi Partizan's 123-grain PSP if you want the most speed and a slightly flatter path. Pick Federal's Fusion 123-grain if you want a bonded soft point that its maker markets for medium game. For practice at the same bullet weight, Wolf's Polyformance 123-grain is a steel-case full metal jacket load that leaves the muzzle 46 fps faster.
