Product Overview
Hornady's Precision Hunter 143-grain is a long-range hunting load. It carries the ELD-X, Hornady's polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a long, low-drag shape, rated at a G1 BC of .625, and leaves the muzzle at 2,700 fps. At 500 yards it still carries 1,308 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Federal's Fusion 140, a bonded soft point, the Precision Hunter starts 25 fps slower but pulls well ahead with distance. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Precision Hunter about 15 inches sideways and Fusion about 23. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Precision Hunter drops about 54 inches at 500 and Fusion about 59. The Precision Hunter kicks about 3 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Winchester's Expedition 142-grain AccuBond LR, another polymer-tipped long-range hunting bullet, the two leave the muzzle at the same 2,700 fps, and the Expedition kicks about 1 percent less in the same rifle.
Buy the Precision Hunter if you expect shots past 300 yards and want a bullet that bucks wind far better than a soft point. Pick Fusion 140 if your shots stay inside 200 yards, where the two drop within half an inch of each other, and you would rather have a bonded soft point. Pick the Expedition 142 if you want a tipped bullet that is also bonded; it matches the Precision Hunter at the muzzle. For practice before the season, Aguila's 140-grain FMJBT is a full metal jacket target load that kicks about 8 percent less in the same rifle.
