Product Overview
Frontier's 75-grain BTHP Match is the heaviest 5.56 NATO load most shooters will run through a magazine-fed rifle. The 0.355 G1 ballistic coefficient is exceptional for this caliber, and it shows at distance. Wind drift drops measurably compared to 55-grain or 62-grain loads. At 2910 fps and 1410 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, this round carries more authority downrange than lighter offerings, staying supersonic well past 800 yards in standard conditions.
Precision rifle competition is the primary home for this load. NRA High Power, CMP Service Rifle, and precision rifle series matches all reward the kind of consistency this ammunition delivers. The boat tail hollow point holds tight groups that shrink noticeably compared to ball ammo at 300 yards and beyond. Hornady manufactures these under the Frontier label, and the quality control reflects that pedigree. One important note: the 75-grain weight demands a 1:7 or 1:8 twist barrel for proper stabilization. Slower twist rates like 1:9 or 1:12 will keyhole these rounds.
Beyond formal competition, this load works well for precision varmint work at extended range. The combination of high BC, match-grade accuracy, and the hollow point's effect on soft tissue makes it effective on prairie dogs and ground squirrels past 300 yards. Compared to PMC's 62-grain M855 at 1174 ft-lbs and Hornady Black's 62-grain FMJ at 1289 ft-lbs, the Frontier 75-grain delivers noticeably more energy at every distance. The trade-off is cost — match-grade components mean a higher price per round than standard ball ammunition.
- The 0.355 G1 BC resists wind drift better than any standard-weight 5.56 load
- Delivers 1410 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, outperforming 55-grain and 62-grain options by a wide margin
- Match-grade BTHP construction from Hornady produces tight groups suitable for formal competition
- Stays supersonic past 800 yards, extending the effective precision envelope of AR-platform rifles
- Requires a 1:7 or 1:8 twist barrel — will not stabilize in 1:9 or slower twist rates
- Higher cost per round than standard ball ammo limits use for casual range sessions
- Heavier projectile may require buffer or gas system tuning in some carbine-length setups
- The longer overall length can reduce reliable capacity to 28 rounds in standard 30-round magazines
