Product Overview
Hornady tags its Superformance 225-grain SST for large game and dangerous game, so it suits a hunter who wants one Hornady load for both. The SST is a polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a lead core, rated at a G1 BC of .515. This load leaves the muzzle at 2,840 fps and still carries 2,348 ft-lbs of energy at 400 yards.
Compared with Hornady's Precision Hunter 230-grain ELD-X, the SST starts 30 fps faster, but the ELD-X holds its speed better downrange. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the SST about 18 inches sideways and the ELD-X about 15. The ELD-X kicks about 3 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Barnes' VOR-TX 225-grain TTSX, the SST is 40 fps faster at the muzzle with nearly the same G1 BC. Zeroed at 100 yards, the SST drops about 51 inches at 500 and the Barnes about 53. The Barnes uses a copper bullet with no lead core.
Buy the SST if you want the Hornady load tagged for both large game and dangerous game. Pick the Precision Hunter ELD-X if your shots may run long in open country and wind is the bigger worry. Pick the Barnes VOR-TX if you want a copper bullet with no lead core; it flies almost the same path. If recoil matters most, Winchester's Super-X 200-grain Power-Point kicks about 17 percent less in the same rifle.
