Product Overview
Hornady markets its Precision Hunter 230-grain ELD-X for large game, and its low-drag bullet makes it the .338 Win Mag load to pick when shots may run long. The ELD-X is Hornady's polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a boat tail, rated at a G1 BC of .616. It leaves the muzzle at 2,810 fps and still carries 2,283 ft-lbs of energy at 500 yards.
Compared with Hornady's Superformance 225-grain SST, the ELD-X starts 30 fps slower but holds its speed better downrange. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the ELD-X about 15 inches sideways and the SST about 18. The ELD-X kicks about 3 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Barnes' VOR-TX 225-grain TTSX, the ELD-X also shoots flatter: zeroed at 100 yards, the Barnes drops about 53 inches at 500 and the ELD-X about 49. The Barnes kicks about 5 percent less in the same rifle.
Buy the ELD-X if you hunt large game in open country where shots can stretch toward 500 yards and wind is part of the problem. Pick the Superformance SST if you want a load Hornady tags for dangerous game as well as large game. Pick the Barnes VOR-TX if you want a copper bullet with no lead core. If recoil matters more than reach, Winchester's Super-X 200-grain Power-Point kicks about 20 percent less in the same rifle.
