Compared with Hornady's Match 285-grain ELD Match, the Underwood holds up just as well in the wind: at 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each about 11 inches sideways. The lighter Hornady drops a little less, about 49 inches at 500 from the same zero, and it kicks about 8 percent less in the same rifle. Compared with Barnes' Precision Match 300-grain at the same bullet weight, the Underwood starts 100 fps faster and flies a flatter path: the Barnes drops about 57 inches at 500, and the same wind pushes it about 14 inches.

Buy the Underwood if you shoot competition or long range with a 300-grain bullet and want less wind drift than Barnes' Precision Match 300-grain or Federal's 300-grain Sierra MatchKing. Pick Hornady's Match 285-grain ELD Match if you want the same wind drift with less recoil. Pick the Barnes if you want a 300-grain load with a little less recoil. Pick Hornady's Match 250-grain BTHP if recoil matters most; it kicks about 26 percent less.
