Product Overview
Winchester markets Deer Season XP for deer hunting, naming whitetail, mule deer and blacktail. This load uses Winchester's Extreme Point, a polymer-tipped hunting bullet with a lead core, rated at a G1 BC of .392. It leaves the muzzle at 3,260 fps and still carries 2,141 ft-lbs of energy at 300 yards.
Compared with Winchester's Deer Season XP Copper Impact 150, the Extreme Point flies almost the same path. Both leave the muzzle at the same speed and kick the same in the same rifle. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each of them about 20 inches sideways. The difference is the bullet: the Copper Impact uses a copper bullet with no lead core. Compared with Federal's Premium 165-grain Barnes TSX, the Extreme Point is faster and flatter. It leaves the muzzle 210 fps faster, and zeroed at 100 yards it drops about 41 inches at 500, against about 47 for the Barnes. The Barnes kicks about 12 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the Extreme Point if you hunt deer, the use Winchester markets it for, and want a fast, flat-shooting 150-grain load with a lead-core bullet. Pick the Copper Impact if you want the same speed and path from a copper bullet; Winchester markets it for elk as well as deer. Pick the Barnes TSX if you want a heavier copper bullet and accept more recoil and a little more drop. If you want a heavier bullet still, Browning's BXS 180-grain carries a polymer-tipped copper bullet 30 grains heavier, but it kicks about 31 percent harder in the same rifle.
