Product Overview
Federal tags its Premium 165-grain Barnes TSX for big game and long range, and it suits a hunter who wants an all-copper bullet. The Barnes Triple-Shock X is a copper hollow point with no lead core, rated at a G1 BC of .398. This load leaves the muzzle at 3,050 fps.
Compared with Sellier & Bellot's 180-grain TXRG, another lead-free hunting bullet, the Barnes is lighter, faster and flatter. It leaves the muzzle 297 fps faster, and zeroed at 100 yards it drops about 47 inches at 500, against about 58 for the TXRG. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes each of them about 22 inches sideways. The TXRG kicks about 6 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Winchester's Deer Season XP 150-grain Extreme Point, a polymer-tipped bullet with a lead core, the Barnes gives up speed: the Winchester leaves the muzzle 210 fps faster, and the same wind pushes it about 20 inches. The Winchester kicks about 11 percent less in the same rifle.
Buy the Barnes if you want a copper bullet with no lead core and a flatter path than the TXRG. Pick the TXRG if you want a heavier lead-free bullet and can live with more drop at 500 yards.
