Product Overview
Hornady sells its Frontier line for plinking, target shooting and training, and this 125-grain FMJ is a light supersonic range load. It fires a full metal jacket bullet, a plain jacketed bullet with a closed nose, made for practice rather than hunting. The bullet has a G1 BC of .250 and leaves the muzzle at 2,175 fps from Hornady's 16-inch test barrel. By 200 yards it has slowed to 1,591 fps.
Compared with Sellier & Bellot's 124-grain FMJ, the Frontier starts 10 fps faster but falls behind with distance. At 300 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Frontier about 20 inches sideways and the Sellier & Bellot about 12. Zeroed at 100 yards, the Frontier drops about 31 inches at 300 and the Sellier & Bellot about 26. Compared with Winchester's USA 125-grain Open Tip, the Frontier is nearly identical: it starts 10 fps slower, kicks the same in the same rifle, and the same wind pushes the Winchester about 18 inches at 300.
Buy the Frontier for plinking and practice at 100 to 200 yards, where it drops within about an inch of both the Winchester and the Sellier & Bellot 124. The Winchester does the same short-range job just as well. Pick the Sellier & Bellot 124 if you shoot out to 300 yards, where it drifts and drops the least of the three. Pick Sellier & Bellot's 147-grain FMJ if you want a heavier practice bullet; it kicks about 32 percent harder in the same rifle. If you want a hollow point, Barnes' 120-grain JHP kicks about 11 percent less than the Frontier.
