Hornady markets its Custom 135-grain FTX for hunting medium and large game, and also tags it for personal defense. The FTX is a polymer-tipped hunting bullet. It carries a G1 BC of .274 and leaves the muzzle at 2,085 fps with 1,303 ft-lbs of energy. Hornady measures that speed in a 16-inch barrel.
Compared with Federal's Power-Shok 150-grain, the 135 shoots flatter but moves more in the wind. Zeroed at 100 yards, the 135 drops about 33 inches at 300 yards and the 150 about 37. At 300 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing straight across the range pushes the 135 about 19 inches sideways and the 150 about 17. The 150 also kicks about 13 percent harder in the same rifle. Compared with Ammo Inc's 110-grain Spitzer, the 135 leaves the muzzle 315 fps slower and kicks about 31 percent harder, because it pushes a heavier bullet.
Buy the Custom 135 if you hunt the medium and large game Hornady markets it for and want a flatter path than the Power-Shok 150 out to 300 yards. Pick Federal's Power-Shok 150-grain if you hunt the big game Federal markets it for, want a little less wind drift and don't mind more recoil. Pick Ammo Inc's 110-grain Spitzer if speed at the muzzle matters most.
