The polymer tip initiates expansion at lower velocities than a hollow point alone, which matters when the bullet has already shed speed passing through intermediate barriers. The 135gr weight keeps velocity high enough for reliable expansion while producing less over-penetration risk than the heavier 150gr supersonic options. Hornady loads this in their Custom line, which means tight quality control on powder charges, case prep, and primer seating.

Hunters using .300 Blackout for hog control or deer-sized game at close to moderate range will find this load effective out to about 200 yards. The FTX bullet expands to roughly 1.5 times its original diameter and retains enough weight to reach vital organs from quartering angles. It is not a long-range hunting bullet, but .300 Blackout was never intended for that role. Within its effective envelope, the Custom 135gr FTX hits hard and opens fast.
