Product Overview
Hornady markets its American Whitetail 180-grain InterLock for medium and large game. The InterLock is a conventional jacketed soft point with a spire point, and Hornady rates it at a G1 BC of .452. It leaves the muzzle at 2,700 fps, and zeroed at 100 yards it drops about 15 inches at 300.
Compared with Federal's 180-grain Fusion, a bonded soft point, the InterLock starts at the same speed and kicks the same in the same rifle, but the Fusion holds up better in wind. At 500 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the InterLock about 22 inches sideways and the Fusion about 20. Compared with Hornady's Superformance 180-grain SST, the InterLock starts 120 fps slower. From the same 100-yard zero, the InterLock drops about 60 inches at 500 and the SST about 53, and the same wind pushes the SST about 19 inches. The SST kicks about 5 percent harder in the same rifle.
Buy the InterLock if you want a conventional soft point for medium and large game and most of your shots fall inside 300 yards, where it drops within half an inch of the Fusion. Pick the Fusion if you want a bonded soft point with less wind drift at the same speed and recoil. Pick the SST if you take longer shots and accept a little more recoil. For much lighter recoil, Barnes' 130-grain Reduced Recoil TTSX kicks about 47 percent less, and Barnes markets it for hunters who prefer lighter recoil.
