How to read it: filled circles are the near and far zero, where the bullet's path crosses the line of sight;the triangle is the peak (max ordinate). The shaded band is the 8" vital zone, ±4" either side of the line of sight. The dashed line marks the edge of the hold-dead-on window. The chart is zoomed to where the zero matters; the tables below run to 500 yards.

Product Overview

Federal's Power-Shok 117-grain is a jacketed soft point .25-06 load made for big game. The bullet is among the plainest of the 117-grain loads compared, a copper jacket over lead with the nose left bare. It leaves the muzzle at 3,030 fps with 2,385 ft-lbs and has a G1 BC of .361.

From a 200-yard zero it drops 7.0 inches at 300 and 20.7 inches at 400, with 1,106 ft-lbs still in hand at 400.

If you're cross-shopping, Fiocchi's Field Dynamics 117-grain PSP is the nearest match, 55 fps slower on a G1 BC of .391, and from a 200-yard zero it drops 20.9 inches at 400. Black Hills Gold's 117-grain SST, on a polymer-tipped bullet, drops 19.0 inches at 400 from that zero.

Strengths
  • About 3 percent less estimated recoil than Winchester's Deer Season XP 117-grain Extreme Point
  • Carries 1,357 ft-lbs at 300 yards
  • A plain soft point, where four of the five loads compared carry a polymer tip or a boat tail
Limitations
  • The lowest G1 BC of the 117-grain loads compared, and HSM's Game King 117-grain Sierra Spitzer BT keeps more speed at 300 yards on the same bullet weight
  • A lead core, so it is out where lead-free ammunition is required
