Product Overview
Federal markets its 62-grain Fusion MSR for hunting with modern sporting rifles and lists it under big game. Its Fusion Soft Point bullet is a soft point with the jacket bonded to the lead core. It carries a G1 BC of .310 and leaves the muzzle at 2,750 fps, and at 300 yards it still carries 520 ft-lbs of energy.
Compared with Barnes' 55-grain VOR-TX TSX, an all-copper hunting load, the Fusion starts 490 fps slower but loses speed more slowly. At 300 yards, a steady 10 mph wind blowing across the range pushes the Fusion about 11 inches sideways and the Barnes about 14. Zeroed at 200 yards, the Fusion drops about 9 inches at 300 and the Barnes about 8. Compared with Sig Sauer's 60-grain Elite, a solid copper load, the Fusion starts 350 fps slower with 239 ft-lbs less energy at the muzzle. It kicks about 7 percent less than the Sig in the same rifle.
Buy the Fusion MSR if you hunt with a modern sporting rifle and want a bonded lead-core bullet that drifts less than the Barnes. Pick the Barnes if you want an all-copper bullet with no lead core and a faster start. Pick the Sig if you want copper at 60 grains with more energy at the muzzle. For a full metal jacket load at the same 62-grain weight, Hornady's Black 62-grain FMJ leaves the muzzle 350 fps faster.
