The Model 642 Ultimate Carry is a Lipsey's-exclusive version of S&W's aluminum-frame, enclosed-hammer J-frame, rated for .38 Special +P. It keeps the five-shot, double-action-only layout and adds an upgraded internal "Endurance Package", an XS Sights tritium front with a dovetailed black U-notch rear, chamfered charge holes, a beveled cylinder front edge, an enhanced boot grip and no internal lock. It weighs 15.3 oz. The question is whether those changes are worth paying for over a standard 642.

The standard Smith & Wesson Model 642 Airweight costs $140 less and weighs 0.7 oz less, but it does without the XS tritium front sight and dovetailed rear. The Ruger LCR is 1.8 oz lighter and costs $80 more, with a 7000-series aluminum frame and Ruger's own double-action mechanism. Reviewers generally rate the stock LCR trigger smoother than a stock J-frame's. For a pocket revolver you will carry more than shoot, the Ultimate Carry's sights are the part you notice.

Buy the 642 Ultimate Carry if you want a J-frame for pocket or ankle carry with a front sight you can find at night and no lock to worry about. Skip it if you are buying on price; the standard 642 Airweight is the same size, fits the same holsters and costs less.
