Product Overview
Underwood's 225-grain Hard Cast WC is a flat-faced hard-cast wadcutter that does not expand; it is built to drive deep and straight for hunting and bear defense. It leaves the muzzle at 1,050 fps with 551 ft-lbs of energy and a power factor of 236 against the 165 major floor. From a 25-yard zero the bullet sits 1.7 inches low at 50 yards and 12.2 inches low at 100. Pressure is standard, and the nickel-plated brass case is reloadable.
Both of its comparisons are DoubleTap 255-grain hard-cast semi-wadcutters, one at standard pressure and one +P. DoubleTap Hunter 255-grain HCSW is the closer match: 75 fps slower and 13 ft-lbs behind this load, with a power factor 12 points higher from its heavier bullet. The DoubleTap +P 255-grain HCSW is in another class: 400 fps faster, 639 ft-lbs more energy and about 124 percent more recoil energy in the same revolver. DoubleTap restricts it to large-frame Ruger revolvers and similar guns rated for +P, so check your revolver before you buy it; the Underwood has no such restriction.
Buy this if you want a standard-pressure hard-cast solid for hunting or bear defense in a .45 Colt revolver that is not rated for +P, and you want more than a cowboy load without the recoil of the +P hunting rounds. If you own one of the large-frame Ruger revolvers and similar guns rated for +P and want a heavier bullet, Buffalo Bore Heavy 300-grain SJFP at 1,325 fps and 1,170 ft-lbs is the step up, at about 165 percent more recoil energy. If you only need a mild jacketed range load for the same revolver, Fiocchi Training Dynamics 225-grain CMJ at 750 fps produces about 42 percent less recoil.
