Product Overview
Underwood loads this .45 Colt round with a 225gr hard cast lead wadcutter at 1,050 fps, producing 551 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. The hard cast alloy is designed to resist deformation on impact, punching straight through rather than expanding. The nickel-plated brass case adds corrosion resistance and smoother feeding. At this velocity, the wadcutter profile cuts a full-diameter hole through tissue and bone without relying on expansion to create a wound channel.
Hard cast bullets are the go-to choice when deep, straight-line penetration matters more than expansion. The wadcutter shape has a flat face that transfers energy efficiently on contact and doesn't deflect on bone the way round nose bullets can. Underwood uses a specific alloy hardness (typically BHN 21+) that won't deform even when hitting heavy muscle and bone on larger animals. This design philosophy is the opposite of a hollow point: instead of dumping energy quickly in soft tissue, it drives through to reach vitals on thick-skinned or heavy-boned game.
Woods carry against black bear and feral hogs is the primary application for this load. Shooters who carry a Ruger Blackhawk or similar strong revolver in bear country want a bullet that will reach vitals from any angle, including a quartering shot through heavy shoulder bone. The hard cast wadcutter does that job reliably. It also works as a trail defense load where penetration through brush and heavy hide matters more than rapid expansion. This is not a target or defensive load. It is built for animals, not paper or people.
- Hard cast alloy resists deformation for deep straight-line penetration on large game
- 551 ft-lbs of energy from a standard-pressure load safe in modern revolvers
- Wadcutter profile cuts a clean full-diameter wound channel without needing expansion
- Nickel-plated brass resists corrosion during extended carry in the field
- Zero expansion means it will over-penetrate in any defensive scenario against people
- Hard cast lead can increase barrel leading at these velocities without gas checks
- Not appropriate for self-defense since it lacks controlled expansion
- Recoil is noticeably stiffer than traditional 800-850 fps .45 Colt loads
