Product Overview
American Eagle 230-grain FMJ is the hot end of standard-pressure .45 ball. It leaves at 890 fps with 404 ft-lbs, the highest velocity and energy among the 230-grain loads in this set, for a power factor of 205 that clears the USPSA major floor of 165 by the widest margin here. From a 25-yard zero it prints 2.4 inches low at 50 yards and 16.1 inches low at 100, holding 856 fps at 50. The speed shows in recoil: about 9 percent more recoil energy than CCI Blazer Aluminum 230 in the same pistol.
The 230-grain comparisons run 830 to 845 fps. This load is 53 fps ahead of Magtech 230, 45 ahead of Blazer Aluminum 230 and 60 ahead of the brass-cased CCI Blazer 230, with 46, 39 and 52 ft-lbs more. In the same pistol it produces about 10 percent more recoil energy than Magtech 230 and about 12 percent more than Blazer 230 brass. At 100 yards it drops 16.1 inches to the Magtech's 18.3 and the Blazer Aluminum's 18.2, and it is 48 fps faster than either at 50. Winchester 185 FMJ is the odd one out, 20 fps faster at 910 fps but with 64 ft-lbs less energy and about 33 percent less recoil energy in the same pistol.
Buy it if you carry a full-power 230-grain hollow point and want practice ammo that feels the same. Federal HST 230 JHP leaves at the same 890 fps with the same 404 ft-lbs, and the recoil estimate for the two loads is identical, the closest ball-ammo rehearsal in this set. Buy something else for the softest .45 session: the brass-cased CCI Blazer 230 at 830 fps gives about 11 percent less recoil energy in the same pistol.
