Product Overview
HSM's Bear Load uses a 305-grain wide flat nose bullet, a heavy non-expanding design built to drive deep and straight for hunting and bear defense. It leaves the muzzle at 1,260 fps with 1,075 ft-lbs of energy. The power factor is 384, more than double the 165 major floor. From a 25-yard zero the bullet drops 1.0 inch at 50 yards and 8.0 inches at 100.
Its two comparisons bracket it. DoubleTap Hunter 320-grain is the same idea taken further: a hard-cast bullet 15 grains heavier, 40 fps faster, with 126 ft-lbs more at the muzzle and a power factor 32 points higher. Hornady Backcountry Defense 240-grain gets to almost the same power factor, 389 to 384, by the opposite route. It gives up 65 grains of bullet and makes up for it with 360 fps more speed. So the Bear Load is the slow, heavy option of the three, and it sits between the other two for recoil in the same revolver.
Buy it if you hunt or hike with a Magnum revolver and want a heavy flat-nose bullet whose job is to go deep and straight, and you accept recoil to match. If you want the most momentum from the same kind of bullet, DoubleTap Hunter 320-grain has a power factor of 416. If you need a load for practice, Ammo Inc Signature 240-grain TMC produces about 23 percent less recoil in the same revolver, which keeps a long range session manageable.
