Product Overview
HSM's Training 180-grain RNFP is a plain lead round-nose flat point with no jacket, which some indoor ranges do not allow. It runs 985 fps and 388 ft-lbs at the muzzle for a power factor of 177, 12 points over the 165 USPSA major floor. A 180-grain bullet makes major at 917 fps, so there is 68 fps in hand, enough to allow for a shorter barrel that gives up some speed.
From a 25-yard zero the bullet is 1.9 inches low at 50 yards, close enough to hold center on paper or steel at that distance. The drop builds after that: the bullet falls another 11.3 inches between 50 and 100 yards and finishes 13.2 inches low, so this is a load for pistol distances. In recoil it is a full-weight major load, not a reduced practice round, so it trains the same recoil control a full-power 180-grain load asks for.
Buy this for outdoor practice and for indoor ranges that permit lead, where the flat point cuts a cleaner hole in paper than a round nose. If your range bars exposed lead, buy a fully enclosed bullet instead: CCI Blazer Clean Fire 180-grain TMJ runs 1,000 fps, 15 fps faster, with about 3 percent more recoil energy in the same pistol, so it feels the same in the hand, though its aluminum case is not reloadable.
